FRANKFURT – Ford unveils its new Fiesta ST concept car at the Frankfurt auto show here today, which the auto maker says “explores the possibilities” of another global performance model to join the Focus ST.

“By taking advantage of platform efficiencies and focusing on our performance engineering resources globally, we can bring performance vehicles to more customers in more markets,” Derrick Kuzak, group vice president-product development, says in a statement.

The Focus ST, also unveiled here, will be sold in more than 40 world markets, including the U.S.

The Fiesta ST, based of Ford’s global B-car platform, was inspired by the Ford Fiesta WRC, which has performed well on rally-racing circuits.

Powered by a 1.6L direct-injected turbocharged EcoBoost engine, the Fiesta ST produces 180 hp and 177-lb.-ft. (240 Nm) of torque and can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 7 seconds. Ford says a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h) is targeted.

The EcoBoost engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, which Ford says will help the performance car deliver carbon-dioxide emissions of less than 140 g/km.

The exterior boasts a large trapezoidal grille, similar to its Focus ST sibling. At the rear, a dramatic diffuser lends an air of sportiness, Ford says.

A lowered stance, widened wheel arches and 17-in. alloy wheels further link the Fiesta ST to the WRC race car.

Inside, the raced theme continues with high-contrast colors and Recaro seats for both driver and passenger.
