Ford’s family of trucks continues growing with the new F-150 Tremor, which is purpose-built for customers looking for a truck with more off-road capability.

Fully 40% of F-150 customers take their vehicles off-road at some point, and Ford aims to cater to those customers with the F-150 Tremor, which is fully equipped to travel over rugged terrain, the automaker says.

“Like Super Duty Tremor and Ranger Tremor, introducing the all-new F-150 Tremor is a direct response to seeing how customers use our trucks to enable their outdoor lifestyles,” says Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager.

The F-150 Tremor uses a high-strength steel frame as well as military-grade aluminum for the body panels.  It comes in a Super Crew configuration with a 5 ½-ft. (1.7-m) bed and its powertrain includes a Ford EcoBoost V-6 making 400 hp and 500 lb.-ft. (678 Nm) of torque and a 10-speed automatic transmission plus standard 4-wheel drive.

The hood and front end of the F-150 Tremor are redesigned with a unique grille, which includes a blacked-out Ford oval highlighted by Active Orange, the model’s signature color. Active Orange also is used on the two recover hooks.

A cutout rear bumper features dual exhausts flanking two recover hooks, which also are painted Active Orange. Special Tremor badges are located on the fenders, bed sides and tailgate.

Active Orange is used throughout the F-150 Tremor’s cabin for stitching and finishes on the doors, center console and instrument panel.

The heart of the F-150 Tremor package is an array of technology designed to help customers move deeper into roadless areas. A 360-degree camera package offers the driver a view of obstacles around the truck as well as real-time tracking of the truck’s direction of travel. Rearview cameras can be called up at higher speed.

The Ford Trail Toolbox is available on the F-150 Tremor, which includes one-pedal driving. This off-road driver-assistance feature is designed for specific maneuvers such as rock crawling or descending a steep grade, which typically require using both the brake and throttle.

One-pedal driving combines those operations into activating just the throttle so the driver can push down on the accelerator to move forward and lift off to stop. Another feature, trail turn assist, reduces the turning radius in tight spots by applying the brakes to the inside rear wheel, allowing for tighter turns at low speeds.

Tremor features selectable drive modes: Sport, Tow/Haul, Eco, Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand, Mud/Rut and Rock Crawl, which automatically disengages the rear locking differential and turns off the stability control and cuts the throttle response.

Also available on the F-150 Tremor is trail control, which Ford says operates like cruise control for off-road travel. The driver sets the speed and then can concentrate on steering the vehicle around obstacles.

The upgraded suspension includes retuned front and rear springs, which add ground clearance and help keep the tires planted.  Front hub knuckles have been upgraded to maintain the additional ground clearance, while Tremor-specific monotube shocks are tuned to deliver a softer ride and better control at low speeds.

The truck’s new 33-in. General Grabber all-terrain tires are mounted on unique 18-in. wheels, which widen the truck’s stance by 1.0 in. (25 mm).  A bash plate protects the front end. The modifications result in an approach angle of 27.8 degrees, breakover angle of 21.6 degrees and ground clearance of 10.9 ins. (28 cm), or 1.5 ins. (3.8 cm) greater than a standard F-150.

The running gear includes a locking differential, and the front differential can be upgraded to a Torsen limited-slip unit. Tremor High Series customers get a torque-on-demand transfer case similar to the high-performance unit in the F-150 Raptor.

The F-150 Tremor can carry up to 1,885 lbs. (855 kg), and drivers can check the size of their load by using built-in scales, which give readings using the center console, taillamp or a phone app. It can tow up to 10,900 lbs. (4,944 kg).

Customers can order the Tremor from dealers now. The price is listed at $49,505 plus a $1,695 destination charge.
