Ford Ranger New Zealand’s Top Seller in Flat May

Motor Industry Assn. CEO David Crawford says the four best-selling models in May were light-commercial vehicles, with the top-selling car, the Toyota Corolla, ranking fifth with 310.

New Zealand’s new-vehicle market edged fractionally lower in May with 10,034 units delivered, down just 30 units from a year earlier.

Year-to-date, the market was up 6% at 52,562 units.

The month saw the Ford Ranger top all sales as Kiwis purchased 511 units, well clear of the Toyota Hilux with 404 units and Nissan Navara with 385.

New-car sales in May rose by 41 units to 6,843. Toyota led the segment with 958 deliveries, ahead of GM Holden (778) and Mazda (695). Year-to-date, Toyota, GM Holden and Mazda also paced the car market.

Toyota remained the overall market leader in May with 1,604 deliveries (16%), followed by GM Holden with 1,105 (11%) and Ford 1,025 (10%).

The top-selling models year-to-date were the Ranger (2,307 units) followed by the Hilux (2,102) and Corolla (1,963). Two more LCVs completed the 5-month totals, the Navara (1,531) and Holden Colorado (1,326).

Year-to-date Toyota (8,761), Holden (5,579) and Ford (5,167) led the market.

CV sales fell by 71 units in May to 3,191, with Toyota leading the way with 646 and also year-to-date at 3,197.

Crawford says SUVs remained the dominant vehicle segment with a 34% market share in May and 32% year-to-date. “Eight of the top 15 passenger vehicle models for the month were SUVs,” he notes.
