Ford to Offer Mondeo Hybrid Station Wagon

Ford Europe is adding a station wagon as it launches a new generation of its Mondeo hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle range.

The new station wagon will allow customers requiring a greater load-carrying capability to benefit from the efficiency of an electric powertrain while maintaining the driving range of a traditional combustion engine.

Ford says it will release full specifications and pricing closer to its 2019 release date.

The Mondeo Hybrid is offered in a 4-door body style, featuring a sports coupe-inspired profile with a low roofline, and also as an upscale Mondeo Vignale variant. A station wagon will strengthen the body style’s 30% mix of total Mondeo sales in the U.K.

Roelant de Waard, Ford vice president-European Marketing, Sales and Service, says the practicality offered by a station wagon is an absolute must for many customers.

Electrified powertrains are playing a key role in Ford’s European product lineup. The automaker

is spending $11 billion and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles by 2022.

The Ford Mondeo Hybrid powertrain uses an electric motor to support a 2.0L Atkinson cycle gasoline engine to drive the wheels, and a generator to allow regenerative charging of the 1.4-kWh air-cooled, recyclable lithium-ion battery. Regenerative braking technology captures up to 90% of the energy normally lost during braking to replenish the battery.

The hybrid powertrain delivers 187 hp, supported by a Ford-developed continuously variable automatic transmission.

The Mondeo Hybrid is assembled alongside the gasoline- and diesel-engine Mondeo range at Ford’s plant in Valencia, Spain.
