Ford U.K. celebrates delivery of its 4 millionth Fiesta as the new owner, buying a new Ford for the fourth time, takes possession of the Fiesta Zetec.

The U.K. accounts for a big percentage of the more than 17 million Fiestas sold in 80 markets worldwide – a number that, if parked bumper to bumper, would circle the planet 1.7 times.

Fiesta has led the small-car segment in the U.K. for 27 of its 37 years and has been the overall best-seller there since 2009 when it overtook the Ford Focus.

“It outsells its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one – and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car,” Ford Britain Chairman and Managing Director Mark Ovenden says in a statement.

The Fiesta name was chosen by Henry Ford II in 1975 as it embodied the fun spirit of a segment-defining car.

A third of Fiesta buyers in the U.K. now choose Ford’s turbocharged 1.0L EcoBoost engine, and almost 90% opt for luxury trim – Zetec, Titanium or Titanium X, with Ford SYNC voice-controlled connectivity system.

Ford says the U.K.’s growing appetite for Fiestas has put orders for the latest 179-hp Fiesta ST on track to double initial forecasts. Equipped with the 1.6L EcoBoost engine, manufactured at Ford’s Bridgend Plant in Wales, the Fiesta ST achieves 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h).
