GM China Group’s FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle joint venture has high expectations for its new pickup truck, rolled out last week.

The Jiefang Kuncheng 4-door pickup is the first vehicle produced at the new FAW-GM assembly plant, located in Changchun, Jilin province in northeast China.

The plant incorporates GM’s Global Manufacturing System and advanced quality controls.

“We see strong potential in China’s pickup market,” Kevin Wale, president and managing director-GM China, says in a statement.

“The Kuncheng has been developed to global standards for performance and quality to meet the needs as well as the expectations of domestic buyers.”

Wale says the new entry targets small and medium enterprises and individual business people in the vast market comprising China’s second- and third-tier cities.

The Kuncheng accommodates five people and includes a foldable rear seat and power windows, locks and mirrors as standard features. Styling highlights include a large chrome front bumper and grille with integrated diamond-crystal headlamps and fog lamps.

Four engine choices are available, with gasoline or diesel versions displacing either 2.2L or 2.4L.

The high-walled cargo box is 19 ins. (48.0 cm) deep, some 4 ins. (10 cm) deeper than traditional pickup boxes, providing 20% more cargo capacity.

Pricing starts at RMB60,000 ($9,260). Deliveries will begin in September.
