General Motors Corp. is considering investing a half billion dollars in two Michigan plants.

The move, which the auto maker has yet to approve, includes $225 million for GM's Orion Township assembly plant and Saginaw metal casting facility.

GM builds the Pontiac G6 at the Orion plant, which shares its platform with the '07 Saturn Aura and '08 Chevrolet Malibu that currently are built at the auto maker's Fairfax, KS, plant.

Quoting GM's application for tax incentives with the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the Detroit Free Press reports the company also intends to allocate an additional $274 million to its various other Michigan operations over the next two to three years.

A GM spokesman cautions the auto maker only is considering the investments, as the state is in the early stage of the tax-break review.

Michigan requires that companies outline their projects when applying for tax abatements, including investment, capital costs and job retention.
