General Motors Co. continues to move around the management pieces, today naming Thomas G. Stephens to the new position of global chief technology officer.

It marks the second straight day of executive shuffling at GM, which Tuesday made some changes in the marketing department and named a new president for its OnStar telematics group.

In his new position, Stephens is expected to find “game-changing technologies to help GM shape the automotive future, leveraging internal and external partnerships to benefit customers today and tomorrow,” the auto maker says in a statement.

He also will be responsible for the company’s research and development organization, led by GM vice president Alan Taub.

“Customers today expect and deserve the very best technology from their GM vehicles,” GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson says. “Tom will make sure that GM technology keeps up with our customers and keeps ahead of our competitors.”

A replacement for Stephens in his current role overseeing global product operations will be named “soon,” GM says.

Stephens will remain on the auto maker’s Executive Committee and report directly to Akerson in the new position, which takes effect Feb. 1.
