Saturn Shows Sky Roadster

General Motors Corp. releases the first visual rendering of its upcoming Saturn roadster, and announces the 2-seat sportscar will be called the Sky.

The rear-wheel drive small car will debut in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show in January. It will arrive at Saturn retailers in early 2006. (See related story: H3 Due in ’05; Curve Due By ’07)

“The new design of Saturn vehicles are heavily influenced by global design trends and conveys a sense of technical harmony,” says Ed Welburn, vice president-GM Design. “Taut, controlled lines combine with fluid surfaces to create a dynamic feel.”

The Sky will be built at GM’s Wilmington, DE, assembly plant, which will begin building the 2-seat Pontiac Solstice roadster early next year. Both vehicles are based on GM’s Kappa architecture.

The Sky borrows its name from the 2-seat Saturn roadster concept that was shown at auto shows in 2002. But the design more closely resembles the Saturn Curve concept, which debuted at the 2004 Detroit auto show.
