Honda’s Mendel to Lead AIAM

The No.2 Japanese auto maker’s U.S. sales chief will succeed Chrysler’s Jim Press as chairman of the group’s board.

American Honda Motor Co. Inc.’s John Mendel is named chairman of the Assn. of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM).

Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, succeeds Jim Press, currently a vice president at Chrysler LLC.

“John Mendel’s 30 years of experience in our industry will be a significant asset to AIAM,” says its president and CEO Mike Stanton.

Mendel joined Ford Motor Co. in 1976 and worked at Ford subsidiary Mazda North American Operations before joining American Honda in 2004.

As chairman of AIAM’s board Mendel will be responsible for advocating on various issues pertinent to AIAM’s 14 member companies, including free trade and defense of the environment.
