Honda refreshes the Civic for the 2022 model year with more grown-up styling and a refined, upscale interior for the sedan and newly arrived hatchback, and information is rolling out about the pocket-rocket Civic Si.

But the big Civic news comes with arrival of the range-topping Civic Type R, which rolls out next year as a 2023 model that builds on the Civic hatchback. Honda shares several images of the car testing at Japan’s Suzuka Circuit.

This isn’t the first time Honda has teased the car either, as it offered previous “testing” shots as the car lapped the legendary Nürburgring in Germany.

The Suzuka images are closer-up and more detailed but still don’t divulge anything about what’s happening underneath the skin.

The Type R's camouflage is something special despite playing the frustrating role of hiding the car’s actual shape. Honda sketched in silhouettes of Civic Type Rs past with giant red R logos behind them, making the whole car a rolling tribute to its ancestors.

Still, there are a few parts of the car that Honda can’t hide. We can see Michelin Pilot 4S tires and red Brembo calipers underneath the car’s black wheels.

And while no powertrain details have been shared, the Type R is sure to sport a power figure well north of the Civic Si’s 200 ponies.

There’s also more than a passing chance the turbocharged Type R will put its power down to the front wheels through a manual gearbox.
