Haldex Lands Prototype Order From Hyundai

Stockholm-based Haldex AB says it will provide a prototype electronic limited slip differential to Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. and Kia Motors Corp. for testing.

The deal with the Korean sister companies marks the first interest in the supplier’s all-wheel-drive technology from an Asian auto maker.

Haldex says it will supply a prototype electronic AWD system that is based on the fourth generation of its electronic limited slip coupling developed from its portfolio of limited slip differentials.

The electronically controlled add-on module integrates into the power and control systems to provide torque distribution front to rear. It also can be used to control side-to-side torque distribution and is an efficient alternative to brake-based traction-control systems, Haldex says.

The limited weight and size of the component maximizes performance with minimal impact on fuel economy, the supplier adds.

Haldex already furnishes its controllable AWD systems to Volkswagen AG for installation in vehicles sold through its VW, Audi, Bugatti, SEAT and Skoda brands. Ford Motor Co.’s Land Rover Freelander and Volvo cars also use the devices. General Motors Corp. employs the Haldex system in the Saab 9-3 and plans to use it in other future models, Haldex says.
