VIENNA – Hyundai Motor Mfg. Czech starts volume production at its second transmission plant in Nosovice, Czech Republic.

The auto maker invested about €70 million ($87.5 million) in the new shop, which created 97 new jobs.

The facility increases the Hyundai subsidiary’s annual transmission-production capacity in the Czech Republic from 300,000 units to 530,000.

Production at Nosovice started 13 months after construction began and two months earlier than first expected.

Original plans called for completion in April 2011, but the project was delayed when a family living near the plant and a citizens’ action group protested the construction in 2010. As a result, Hyundai Czech had to wait significantly longer than expected for the necessary approvals.

Nosovice-built gearboxes also are shipped to the Kia Motors Slovakia factory in Teplicka nad Vahom, Slovakia, and to the Hyundai Motor Mfg. Rus plant in St. Petersburg, Russia.
