The Korean auto maker launched its Australian operations at a single dealership in Perth, selling one single model. It took Hyundai 18 years to sell 500,000 units, but just eight years to double that.
The brand's growth accelerated after Hyundai in 2003 established Hyundai Motor Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary.
Marketing Director Oliver Mann says in a statement that brand recognition and sales have been boosted by high-profile local partnerships including Hyundai A-League football, the Carlton and Brisbane clubs in the Australian Football League and the Australian Masters golf tournament.
It also maintains its 26-year sponsorship of the Hyundai Hopman Cup international tennis tournament in Perth.
Key vehicles for Hyundai in Australia include the Excel, for a short time Australia's best-selling car, the Getz minicar, which sold more than 158,070 units over its 9-year lifespan, and the award-winning i30 hatchback, the brand’s top seller with 28,869 deliveries last year.
Australian sales of Hyundai reached 87,008 units in 2011, equivalent to a market share of 8.6%, through a nationwide network of 150 dealers. It now is the country’s fifth-largest vehicle brand.
