American Electronic Components Inc. (AEC) has introduced a programmable rotary position sensor that it claims will reduce manufacturing and assembly costs and improve vehicle performance. Designed for throttle position, pedal position, ride height, transmission shift position and EGR valve position sensing, the sensor allows a vehicle manufacturer to electronically calibrate the sensor after it is installed, reducing part-to-part and process variation.
The sensor also should eliminate warranty costs because it is a non-contacting magnetic sensor. Current position sensor technology employs resistance sensors with contacting parts that wear out over time. AEC has contracts for the new sensor with Ford Motor Co., Cummins Engine Co. and John Deere, and expects it to be on a production vehicle in model year 2001.
