CHENGDU, Sichuan – SAIC-GMWuling Automobile (SGMW) officially launched its first independent passenger car, the Baojun 630, in Chengdu on August 9.
After Chengdu, the new car will be introduced through a national tour in select cities including Zhengzhou, Nanning, Jinan, Changsha, Shijiazhuang, Nanjing and Harbin, according to a company press release.
Three variants of the Baojun 630 are offered at a retail price of between ¥62,800 and ¥73,800 ($9,235 and $10,853).
Baojun is the fourth brand offered by General Motor’s joint ventures with SAIC in China, following Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac, and also the third brand offered by SAIC, China’s largest automaker by sales, along with the Roewe and MG brands, said SGMW President Shen Yang.
With a wheelbase of 2,640 mm, the Baojun 630 features dimensions of 4,597x1,736x1,462 mm (LxWxH), larger than other compact car models in the market. Equipped with a 1.5L P-TEC engine, along with a 5-speed transmission, the model can reach a maximum power of 81 kW/5,800 rpm and maximum torque of 146 Nm/4,200 rpm.
The new car owns a fuel consumption of 6.9L/100 kilometers and meets all local emission standards as well as the Euro IV standard.
Designed by the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center, the Baojun 630 is initially targeted at consumers in China’s 2nd- and 3rd-tier cities. It will be gradually entered in 1st- and 4th-tier cities nationwide.
More than 120 Baojun 4S retailers across the country will be opening for business during the national launch tour, and the sales target for this year is set at 20,000 units, the company says.

SGMW, a joint venture by Shanghai Automotive Industry (Group) Corp. (SAIC), GM China and Wuling Motors, was launched in 2002. Based in Liuzhou, Guangxi, SGMW currently manufactures a range of Wuling-brand mini trucks and microvans, as well as the Chevrolet Spark Le Chi mini car.
In 2010, SGMW had record domestic sales of 1,226,860 vehicles. In the first seven months of 2011, it sold 719,268 vehicles in China, the company says.
