CV Gains Highlight Strong May Result in New Zealand

The 3,262 commercial-vehicle registrations were up 11% from year-ago and the strongest May since the industry began keeping records.

New Zealand’s May new-vehicle sales continued to reflect the country’s economic health, with 10,064 units delivered, the Motor Industry Assn. says.

New-car sales rose 7.2% to 6,802 units during the month, leaving the year-to-date total up 11% to 49,639.

Association CEO David Crawford says the strong economic conditions are resulting in sales records.

“There were 3,262 registrations of new commercial vehicles for the month of May, the strongest May sales since the MIA began collecting records for commercial vehicles,” Crawford says in a statement. The CV deliveries were up 11% from year-ago.

“Year-to-date registrations of commercial vehicles are a whopping 20% ahead of May 2013, reflecting a continued strong market for commercial vehicles,” he says.

Toyota continued its domination, delivering 1,931 units in May for a 19% market share. Ford followed with 1,118 units (11%) and then GM Holden with 1,090 (11%).

Toyota led the car segment for the month with a 15% share (996 units), ahead of GM Holden with 12% (798) and Ford with 8% (562). Toyota also set the CV sales pace with 935 units (29% share), followed by Ford with 556 (17%) and Holden with 292 units (9%).

The Suzuki Swift led the car segment with 272 deliveries, ahead of the Toyota Corolla (241) and the Mazda CX-5 (230).

The Toyota Hilux was the top-selling CV model in May with 566 units (17% market share), followed by the Ford Ranger with 503 (15%) and the Toyota Hiace with 348 (11%).

Year-to-date the Ford Ranger remained the top-selling CV with 2,183 units for a 16% market share, followed by the Toyota Hilux with 2,069 (15%).

SUVs grew to represent 30% of all vehicles sale in May, followed by pickups/chassis cabs with 22% and small cars, 16%.
