TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Among other things, the CAR Management Briefing Seminars here will touch on “five Cs,” says Carla Bailo, president of the Center for Automotive Research, which stages the annual event.

She lists them as she opens the automotive conference:

  • Controversy. There’s always some of that in the auto industry, she says. She later gives an example to Wards: “Much of the industry is investing in electric and autonomous vehicles, but will people want them and stop driving (conventional) vehicles?”

  • Connectivity. That includes so-called connected cars equipped with advanced technology, particularly as the industry moves to self-driving vehicles. “Everything is connected,” Bailo says.

  • Cybersecurity. The ability of a hacker to take control of a connected vehicle is a great industry concern, she says.

  • China. The tariff war between China and the U.S. seems to worsen, not abate.

  • Cherries, Chardonnay and Cabernet. Actually those are three Cs right there. They might be on menus, but none is on the conference agenda.
