VIENNA – Russia’s largest auto maker, AvtoVAZ, opens a new design studio in the capital city of Moscow.

The studio, which currently employs 12 people, will support AvtoVAZ’s main design center in Togliatti, about 1,000 km (600 miles) southeast of Moscow, and will contribute to the design of future Lada models.

Steve Mattin, who joined AvtoVAZ as design director last October, is based in Togliatti but will spend some time every week in the new Moscow branch. His task is to create a new design concept for Lada cars.

Between 2005 and 2009, the U.K. native served as vice president and design director at Volvo. Before joining the Swedish auto maker he worked 18 years at Daimler, putting his stamp on models such as the Mercedes-Benz A-, S- and SL-Class, SLR, C-Class sport coupe and Maybach.

Mattin’s contract runs for three years, according to AvtoVAZ President Igor Komarov.

The auto maker plans to unveil Mattin’s initial work, a Lada cross/utility vehicle concept, at the Moscowauto show in late August.
