The record sales pace continues in New Zealand, where dealers drive the biggest May in the industry’s history with new-vehicle deliveries up 11.4% year-on-year to 11,180 units.

Motor Industry Assn. CEO David Crawford says it was the strongest May since his organization began collating sales data in 1975.

“There were 7,502 passenger-vehicle registrations and 3,678 commercial-vehicle registrations, which were once again the highest month of May on record for CV registrations,” he says in a statement.

The result left the year-to-date total up 5.3% at 55,374 units.

Toyota led the May results with 1,753 sales for a 16% market share. Ford followed with 1,511, ahead of Holden on 1,088.

Toyota remained the passenger-vehicle market leader for the month with 965 deliveries, ahead of Ford (697) and GM Holden (677). Ford led the CV segment with 814 units, followed by Toyota (788) and Holden (411).

Toyota Corolla regained its position as the top-selling passenger model with 323 sales, followed by the Toyota RAV4 (249) and Mazda CX-5 (246).

The Ford Ranger stayed atop the May market as it led the CV segment with 755 units, ahead of the Toyota Hilux (573) and Holden Colorado (382).
