New commercial-vehicle deliveries jumped 36% year-on-year in New Zealand to a September-record 2,799 units.

Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford says while car sales climbed 6.5% to 7,272 units, last month’s CV demand was going gangbusters. The result was the highest for the month since the MIA began collecting records in 1981, he says.

Deliveries totaled 10,070 units during the month, with Crawford saying in a statement the result confirms what many economists have been saying: Economic confidence is growing.

Toyota’s 2,220 sales were good for a 22.0% market share, comfortably ahead of Ford with 1,129 for 11.2% and GM Holden with 912 for 9.1%.

The month’s CV sales saw Toyota log 676 units, ahead of Ford (484) and GM Holden (309). Top-selling models were the Ford Ranger with 425 units, Toyota Hilux (406) and Holden Colorado (283 units).

Year-to-date CV deliveries were up 25.7% to 22,754 units with the Hilux leading the way with 3,602 for a 16% market share, ahead of the Ranger with 3,392 for 15%.

Car sales through September were up 6.5% to 60,589 units. Toyota led with 1,544 for a 21.2% market share, followed by Hyundai (693) and Ford (603).

The Toyota Corolla was the top-selling model with an 8% market share, followed by the Toyota Rav4 with 5% and Toyota Yaris, Mazda3 and Suzuki Swift with 3% each.

SUVs took 27% of the market in September, with small cars accounting for 21% and pickups/chassis cabs 19%.
