New Zealand LV Market Records Torrid August Result
New-car sales jumped 14.5% year-on-year for the strongest August since 1987, while commercial-vehicle deliveries climbed 17.4% for the segment’s best result since August 1984.
The New Zealand new-vehicle industry’s remarkable year continues with the best August sales since the 1980s.
Motor Industry Assn. CEO David Crawford calls the August result prodigious as deliveries soared 15.4% year-on-year to 9,430 units.
New-car sales jumped 14.5% year-on-year to 6,828 units for the strongest August total since 1987, while commercial-vehicle deliveries climbed 17.4% to 2,602, the segment’s best performance since August 1984.
Crawford says the result continues a remarkable year for new-vehicle sales with the 8-month total up 10.7% to 83,279 units. Within this, car deliveries were up 6.1% to 63,321 and the CV market pulled ahead a healthy 24.4% to 19,958.
MIA data shows the SUV segment was the most popular in August with 24% of the market, giving it 27% year-to-date.
Toyota continued its dominance of the New Zealand market last month with a 17.8% share after delivering 1,683 units comprising 1,080 cars and 603 CVs. GM Holden followed with an 11.3% share on 1,067 units, closely followed by Ford’s 11.0% with 1,041.
Year-to-date, Toyota expanded its sales lead with 14,176 units for a 19.3% market share. Ford was a distant second with 7,961 and a 10.9% share, ahead of Holden’s 7,506 and 10.2% share.
The Toyota Corolla was New Zealand’s top-selling car in August with 328 units, ahead of the Holden Cruze (271) and Holden Commodore (247).
The Ford Ranger topped the month’s CV market with 392 units, followed by the Toyota Hilux (376) and Nissan Navara (290).
