Perodua Bids for Global Recognition With New Compact
The automaker says the EEV can achieve up to 50.8 mpg and is packed with unique Malaysian features.
Malaysian automaker Perodua begins accepting bookings for its new Axia compact, the Southeast Asian country’s first energy-efficient vehicle (EEV), with a tentative starting price of RMB24,900 ($7,888).
Perodua says the EEV can achieve up to 50.8 mpg (4.6 L/100 km) and is packed with unique Malaysian features.
The name “Axia” (pronounced a-ZEE-a) was chosen by combining the word Asia, removing the S and adding X as the Roman numeral for the number 10 – representing Perodua’s 10th model.
“We believe that the Perodua Axia is competitive in the region, which is why the word Asia was incorporated into the name. In addition, this vehicle also represents a whole new standard for us,” Perodua President and CEO Aminar Rashid Salleh says in a statement.
“This standard can be categorized by four key highlights – environmentally friendly, very spacious for a compact vehicle, easy driving and economical in terms of the overall cost of ownership.”
The Axia comes in four variants, Standard E, Standard G, Special Edition and Advance. In a first for Perodua, it has a 5-year warranty. No launch date has been released.
Perodua says that with the tagline “Your Smart Move,” the Axia represents the company’s efforts to become globally competitive in styling, features and price competitiveness.
