Mitsubishi and Daihatsu launch a feasibility study of Malaysian national auto maker Perodua’s proposal to build sedan models in the country.
“I’ve expressed the intention to produce sedan cars to Perodua's top management and our partners,” Managing Director Aminar Rashid Salleh tells the government’s Bernama news agency. “We've now started the feasibility study.
“I've seen the demand in the sedan segment, and I thought, ‘Why can’t Perodua do it?’”
Salleh declines to discuss a timeline or other details of the study by the two Japanese auto makers, which share a 51% equity interest in Perodua.
Malaysian rival Proton already manufactures sedans, but for the past six years Perodua has outsold its rival overall. Last year, Perodua sold 180,000 cars for 30% of the Malaysian market.
