Proton is set to announce the launch of a low-priced car for the Malaysian market on Saturday.

The Business Times, quoting unnamed senior Proton sources, says the car will be a new variant of an existing model costing 10% less. It is a response by the auto maker to a government call for more affordable cars.

Proton also is debuting its midsize Preve sedan in Indonesia, the fourth export market for the model after Australia, Thailand and Brunei.

Executive Chairman Khamil Jamil says the auto maker aims to sell 2,500 units in Indonesia this year, including 200 to 220 Preve models.

“We are fully committed to change the public’s acceptability and perception about the brand, and the 5-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) recognition for the Proton Preve is proof of the improved quality and safety capabilities of our cars,” he says in a statement.

“With the introduction of Preve in Indonesia, Proton reiterates its commitment and determination to be recognized as a reputable, trusted and preferred car brand in this region.”
