Thai Auto Makers Expect Exports to Bounce Back
Year-to-date production is up 4.7% to 957,843 units, with pickup trucks accounting for 62% of that total, as the industry recovers from Japan’s parts shortage.
The Thai auto industry expects vehicle exports to improve this month and return to normal in September after production was curtailed by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March.
Pickup output rose 1.45% in July.
Spokesman Surapong Phaisitpattanapong of the Federation of Thai Industries Automobile Industry Club tells the Bangkok Post exports fell 13.5% year-on-year in July to 75,803 units.
Asia took 32% of Thai vehicle exports, ahead of Australia (21%) and the Middle East (20%).
Thai exports in May tumbled 48% year-on-year to 38,656 units, but climbed 9.2% to 75,631 units in June.
“The lower exports in July had nothing to do with the export markets, but were purely the result of the automobile production reduction,” Surapong tells the newspaper.
Exports for the first seven months of the year were down 5.75% to 476,708 units.
Surapong says Thai production rose just 1% in July compared with year-ago to 147,236 units, with passenger cars up 0.13% to 50,205 units and pickup trucks gaining 1.45% to 96,987.
Year-to-date production is up 4.7% to 957,843 units, with pickup trucks accounting for 62% of that total.
