Highway signs in the U.S. receive brighter treatments in an effort by the nation’s Department of Transportation to reduce roadway fatalities.

A new rule from the DOT directs states to use higher performing reflective materials on all highway signs and also requires public agencies to adopt sign maintenance methods to improve their visibility from greater distances.

“The new standards will make highway signs as visible as possible to drivers in low-light conditions,” says Federal Highway Administrator J. Richard Capka, in a statement.
