Software-defined vehicles are going to phase in to the auto industry over the next decade. SDVs could account for 90% of total auto production by 2029, up from just 3.4% in 2021, driven by navigation, infotainment and comfort features.

The big challenge for automakers is adapting their product development and engineering cultures from internal-combustion engines to software, and figuring out how much software engineering and data management to develop in-house, versus outsourcing it to suppliers.

In this week’s WardsAuto podcast, host David Kiley talks with John Heinlein, chief marketing officer of Sonatus, one of the leading suppliers of software services to automakers and currently partnering with Hyundai Group, including all three of the company’s brands: Hyundai, Kia and Genesis.

We’ll also touch on Tesla’s delay of its Robotaxi unveiling, a new forecast of BEV sales that will surprise many and a whole flock of new grants given to automakers to develop plants and supply chain for BEVs.
