Despite a couple of early products well-received by the media and customers when the Infiniti brand launched 35 years ago, it quickly became a bit of a late-night punchline when its introductory ad campaign was full of Zen contemplative words set against images of beaches, rocks and trees.

Along the way, it has had some product victories, but also a lot of yawns from a business standpoint, as its success in the marketplace has been dwarfed by Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura, which launched around the same time. Now, even upstart Genesis, Hyundai’s premium brand, is nipping at its heels.

Infiniti has no electrified vehicles in its lineup right now. That will change soon. In the meantime, it is readying the launch of an all-new, internal-combustion-powered QX80 SUV. WardsAuto Podcast Host David Kiley caught up with Infiniti brand chief Group VP Craig Keeys who discusses the future of the Nissan luxury brand.
