BMW Previews New Curved Instrument Display

BMW confirms the upcoming production version of its electric-powered iNext SUV due out in 2021 will feature a curved digital display within a newly designed driver-oriented cockpit.

The high-definition single-section display, which also is earmarked for other future BMW models, houses a fully digital instrument panel and touch-sensitive infotainment monitor, according to the German automaker.

BMW says the new curved display in the iNext is mounted in such a way that occupants cannot see its connection to the dashboard, giving it a floating “sense of lightness.”

Housed within a magnesium bracket, it uses non-reflecting glass and does without a brow.

“The curved display is set in high-quality materials and is virtually freely suspended on the instrument panel. This makes it a key element in terms of the modern, luxurious and generous sense of space in the BMW iNext,” says Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design.

As part of a new, in-house-developed ID8 operating system, BMW says individual content items can be shifted back and forth within the iNext’s curved display, both within the driver’s direct field of vision and the area that can be used by the front-seat passenger.
