Flagship Volvo S90 Sedan to Debut in Detroit
Volvo reveals its all-new ’17 S90 sedan at the Detroit auto show. The flagship 4-door shares architecture and powertrains with the popular ’16 XC90, including an optional 407-hp hybrid drive system.
Volvo is building on positive response to its ’16 XC90 SUV by replacing its aging S80 sedan with the all-new S90 luxury sedan.
The ’17 S90 rides on the same Scalable Product Architecture as the XC90. The S90 and XC90 are the Swedish automaker’s first ground-up products since the company was sold by Ford to Chinese automaker Geely in 2010.
Geely invested heavily in research and development, mostly at the company’s base in Gothenburg, Sweden, to jump-start the new products and get them to market.
“With $11 billion of investment over the past five years we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be – we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand,” says Håkan Samuelsson Volvo president and CEO.
The XC90 is a roaring success, with 9,642 U.S. deliveries year-to-date in 2015, up nearly 150% compared with the same period in 2014, WardsAuto data shows. The XC90 represents 16% of the brand’s U.S. sales.
Plush interior reflects Swedish automaker’s push for luxury.
The S90 competes at the high end of the premium segment, taking on flagships such as the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Cadillac’s new CT6 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The range-topping S90 T8 is fitted with Volvo’s Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain, featuring a pair of electric motors teamed with a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L I-4 gasoline engine to produce 407 hp (300 kw) and 472 lb.-ft. (640 Nm) of torque.
The non-hybrid T6 is powered by the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L I-4 making 316 hp and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque, while the front-drive T5 turbocharged 2.0L I-4 produces about 250 hp and 258 lb.-ft. (350 Nm) of torque. All models are equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.
Like the XC90, the S90 comes with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that gives gentle steering nudges to keep the car in its lane.
The S90 premieres in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and goes on sale in late summer.
