Automotive supplier Lear and Gentherm, a specialist in thermal-management technologies, enter a strategic partnership to develop thermal seating solutions for vehicles.

The partnership will pursue advanced development of a highly integrated, modular heating and cooling solution for Lear’s Intu seating system, the companies say in a news release.

The growth of ridesharing, electrification and autonomous-vehicle applications has created increased focus on design and engineering of the vehicle cabin with technologies that let passengers personalize their spaces for individual comfort. The companies say they will develop the more-efficient thermal systems needed to optimize the heating and air conditioning system.

“The need for improved personal comfort is paramount, and our combined technology will give passengers the freedom to customize their own environment while optimizing efficiency to improve energy consumption of the vehicle heating and cooling system,” says John Absmeier, chief technology officer for Southfield, MI-based Lear.

Adds Phil Eyler, president and CEO of Northville, MI-based Gentherm: “Our expertise in human thermophysiology perfectly complements Lear’s strength as a leader of automotive seating and electronic systems. I am delighted that our teams will join forces to drive innovation in vehicle interior comfort solutions.”
