Saab Automobile will define more clearly its designs on the midsize wagon segment with this month's unveiling of the 9-3 Sport-Hatch Concept.
The 5-door, 4-seater will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0L engine that puts out 250 hp, the car is inspired by the 9-3X “crossover coupe” that originally bowed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
“Just as the 9-3X occupies a position where coupe meets off-roader, this car represents a crossover point between hatchback and wagon,” says Saab Executive Director-Design Michael Mauer.
The car — which features a glass roof — retains the Saab face and the subtly rising beltline that is also the brand's trademark. But its taillamp treatment is reminiscent of the rear-pillar configuration on the Volvo XC90.
“This concept car isn't just a show car, it demonstrates our intent to continue to evolve and expand the 9-3 model line,” says Saab Chairman and CEO Peter Augustsson.
The 9-3, which launches a new convertible Oct. 1 as an adjunct to its redesigned sport sedan, is Saab's “bread and butter,” Augustsson tells Ward's. Next summer, Saab introduces the smaller, all-wheel-drive 9-2, aimed at younger buyers and to be sold only in North America.
