BMW Adds Turbodiesel to 7-Series Lineup

CHICAGO – BMW brings advanced diesel technology to its 7-Series sedan flagship for the first time in the U.S. with the new 740Ld making its North American debut at the Chicago Auto Show today.

The long-wheelbase, all-wheel-drive 740Ld features BMW’s 3.0L DOHC inline 6-cyl., a 2014 Ward’s 10 Best Engines winner, mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The turbodiesel develops 255 hp and 413 lb.-ft. (560 Nm) of torque, propelling the 7-Series from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 6.1 seconds.

EPA fuel-economy estimates aren't available yet, but BMW says it expects a 25%-30% improvement over a gasoline engine, with speculation it could be rated at least 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) highway.

Prices will start at $83,425 when the 740Ld goes on sale this spring, including standard Driving Dynamics control and stop/start system.

The 740Ld xDrive sedan will join a growing list of BMW Advanced Diesel models in the U.S., which now includes the 328d and 328d xDrive sedans; 328d xDrive Sports Wagon; 535d and 535d xDrive sedans; and X5 xDrive35d CUV.
