BMW Manufactures 3 Millionth Engine at U.K. Plant
High-tech, high-fuel-efficiency 4-cyl. gasoline engines have been built for BMW vehicles for more than a decade at the plant, which has produced more than 1 million engines for the Mini alone.
BMW’s U.K. engine plant builds its 3 millionth engine, a 1.6L, 4-cyl. gasoline mill shipped to the auto maker’s Mini plant in Oxford, England, for a car to be exported to the emerging Indian market.
More than 80% of the Minis produced in the Hams Hall plant near Birmingham, England, are destined for overseas markets, and more than 1.6 million have been exported since the car was re-launched in 2001.
Mini made its debut in the premium-small-car segment earlier this year in India, the brand’s 100th export market.
Hams Hall Plant Director Nick Spencer says the 3-million-unit milestone follows a year of record engine output in 2011, and affirms that facilities will be upgraded at the plant to allow the production of future-generation mills at the site.

The U.K.-built engines are supplied to production plants in Germany and Austria. They power the BMW X1 and 1-Series and the latest-model 3-Series, as well as all Mini gasoline-powered models.
