Infiniti says its new QX60 Hybrid, based on the model formerly known as the JX cross/utility vehicle, will achieve a best-in-class 26 mpg (9.0 L/100 km) when it goes on sale late this summer in the U.S.

Infiniti says the model’s fuel efficiency is expected to outperform any other 7-passenger model in the Ward’s Luxury Large CUV segment.

The 26-mpg figure also represents a 24% increase over non-hybrid QX60 fuel economy ratings.

The QX60 Hybrid debuts today at the New York International Auto Show.

The new hybrid CUV gets the same powertrain as the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid also debuting in New York: a front-wheel-drive version of the current Infiniti M Hybrid’s 1-motor, 2-clutch “Infiniti Direct Response” system.

The 250-hp system marries a 2.5L 4-cyl. supercharged gasoline engine with a 15kW (20-hp) electric motor, continuously variable transmission and lithium-ion battery pack.

As with the Pathfinder, Infiniti predicts the QX60 Hybrid will carry a $3,000 premium over its gasoline-engine-only lineup mates.

The QX60 will be one of three Infiniti hybrids sold in the U.S., following the current M and an upcoming hybrid version of the next-generation G sedan.

With the ’14 model year, Infiniti is changing the names of all its models, with light trucks getting the “QX” designation and cars “Q.” The M will become the Q70 and the G the Q50.

The QX60 hybrid shares many design features with the non-hybrid model, including its double-arch front grille.

It also has many of the same standard and optional equipment, including a power liftgate; power-folding and heated outside mirrors; door-handle courtesy lights; panoramic moonroof; heated front and outboard rear seats; Bluetooth hands-free calling; a rearview monitor; and Infiniti’s hard-drive navigation system with touchscreen.

Optional safety features for the QX60 Hybrid include lane-departure prevention and warning systems, backup-collision intervention and Infiniti’s Around View Monitor that simulates an overhead view of the vehicle.

The QX60 Hybrid will be assembled in Smyrna, TN, home of the current JX.

In 2012, its first year on sale, 21,674 JXs were sold, WardsAuto data shows. Deliveries through February stood at 4,270, trailing the best-selling 3-row luxury CUV, Acura’s MDX, which tallied 5,521 units in the period.
