The ’06 model features a 2L DOHC 16-valve, intercooled turbocharged I-4 engine that churns out 286 hp and 289 lb.-ft. (392 Nm) of torque at 3,500 rpm.

New to the ’06 model is the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control (MIVEC) system, which uses a variable valve-timing sprocket to optimize valve timing relative to the engine condition, says MMNA.

“The Lancer Evolution IX exemplifies the core DNA of the Mitsubishi Motors brand, with unrivaled performance born from a history-intense competition and racing success against some of the finest manufacturers in the world,” says MMNA President and CEO Rich Gilligan.

The vehicle’s standard 5-speed manual transmission, derived from the Mitsubishi close-ratio competition gearbox, features new gear ratios to improve acceleration, the auto maker says. However, the top gear ratio has been modified for improved high-speed cruising.

A 6-speed close-ratio manual is available on the Lancer Evolution MR, one of three trims including the stock and RS models.

All three versions have a rally-tuned fully independent suspension, front- and rear-limited slip differentials, and 4-wheel ventilated Brembo disc brakes. The MR trim has Bilstein monotube shock absorbers.

All three have full-time all-wheel drive with three active center-differential modes: tarmac, gravel and snow.

Exterior changes from the Evolution VIII include a new front fascia with oversize mesh grille and front center bumper air inlets to improve engine-cooling efficiency, the closure of all unnecessary openings on the undersurface of the bumper to cut air resistance and a hollow carbon fiber spoiler on the rear wing that serves to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity.

On the inside are standard Recaro bucket seats with Alcantara upholstery, side bolsters with leather accents, plus a new seating arrangement allowing for easier exit and entry of the vehicle, says MMNA.

The IX and MR models feature aluminum accelerator, brake and clutch pedals, while all trims have a 3-spoke, dark titanium Momo steering wheel.

A variety of accessory packages are available across the board. One that includes a manual transmission shift knob and turbo boost gauge kit is standard on the RS. Another that features an aluminum shift knob, carbon fiber and aluminum brake grip and color-keyed vortex generator is standard on the MR.

A 140-watt 6-disc audio system is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to the optional 315-watt Premium Mitsubishi/Infinity system with seven speakers, including a subwoofer.

The vehicle, which MMNA says will debut in September, will carry Mitsubishi’s standard 5-year/60,000 mile (97,000 km) warranty.
