Toyota Australia begins exports of its new, locally built 4-cyl. AR series engines to Thailand and Malaysia a week after full production starts at its new Altona engine plant outside Melbourne.

It is the first time Toyota Australia has sold stand-alone engines to the two countries. Both gasoline and hybrid versions are being shipped, with the first deliveries expected next month.

About 108,000 engines will be produced this year, 85% of them gasoline and 15% hybrid.

Toyota expects to export about 18,000 engines this year, while more than 90,000 will be fitted to the auto maker’s locally built Camry and Camry Hybrid sedans for domestic and export markets.

Chris Harrod, manufacturing and purchasing executive director-Toyota Australia, says the auto maker and its employees worked hard to secure the investment for the Altona plant and to ensure it is producing top-quality engines.

“The fact that we were able to secure new export markets in Thailand and Malaysia is testament to the quality of our work and the positive reputation Toyota Australia has amongst our affiliates,” Harrod says in a statement.

“It also shows good cooperation and support from the Toyota group within the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region, which has allowed us to further expand our engagement and linkage to the Toyota global network.”

Harrod says Australia now is one of only four countries to produce the AR-series engine, and it is the only Australian manufacturer to produce both gasoline and hybrid powerplants.
