Porsche’s new 911 Carrera, set to bow at September’s Frankfurt auto show, is the German auto maker’s first sports car to break the 200 g/km barrier in carbon-dioxide emissions.
The improved fuel efficiency comes via a new 3.4L 6-cyl. boxer engine that cranks out 350 hp but is rated at 28.7 mpg (8.2 L/100 km), a 16% gain from the outgoing model. The performance equates to 194 g/km in CO2 emissions, the auto maker says.
The Carrera S model also accents fuel efficiency. While output of its 3.8L boxer engine is rated at 400 hp, up 15 hp, it delivers 27.0 mpg (8.7 L/100 km) when mated to the optional PDK automatic transmission, a 14% improvement from the previous-generation model. CO2 emissions are rated at 205 g/km.
Porsche says the car features an all-new body that combines steel and aluminum to cut weight 99 lbs. (45 kg).
Other additions include the world’s first 7-speed manual transmission, a stop/start system and electro-mechanical power steering.
Joining the 911 on Porsche’s Frankfurt stand will be the Panamera diesel model.
The auto maker says the 250-hp V-6 diesel boosts the luxury sedan’s fuel economy to 37.3 mpg (6.3 L/100 km) and provides a range of more than 746 miles (1,200 km) between fill-ups.
