American Suzuki Motor Corp. is following in the footsteps of Chrysler LLC by introducing a sales promotion to lessen the burden of high gas prices on consumers.

“Free Gas for Summer” will run from May 1 through June 30 and is available for those who purchase new ’07 and ’08 model Suzukis, the auto maker says.

Buyers will get free gas for a 3-month period, as well as 0% financing for a period of 60 months to those who qualify, Suzuki says.

“Suzuki recognizes the economic impact resulting from soaring gas prices and thought this promotion was a great way to entice eager car buyers,” Gary Akin, vice president of sales-American Suzuki, says in a statement.

Buyers who purchase an ’08 Grand Vitara, for instance, will get a Visa pre-paid gas card worth $470. Buyers selecting smaller Suzuki models, such as the SX4 and Reno, will receive a pre-paid card worth $320-$355.
