U.K. engine manufacturing started the year up 0.2% year-on-year in January to 206,686 units, driven by domestic demand.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says output for the U.K. market climbed 11.2% to 78,960 units, more than enough to offset a 5.6% drop in export demand to 127,726.
The result reduced the export share of production to 61.8% from a year-ago 65.6%.
SMMT CEO Mike Hawes says the January result gives the sector a solid start to the year.
“Manufacturers have invested over £1 billion ($1.54 billion) to U.K. engine production in recent years, which is expected to yield an increase in output,” Hawes says in a statement.
