TURIN, Italy – Lamborghini will launch production of its first SUV in 2017.

Audi Group Chairman Rupert Stadler makes the announcement during a celebration of Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary attended by some 1,000 owners of the luxury cars from 30 countries and representatives of parent Volkswagen Group.

Stadler says production of the Lamborghini Urus plug-in hybrid was approved a few weeks ago, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The Urus concept was unveiled at the 2012 Beijing auto show, as Lamborghini is looking to China as the first market for the SUV.

Although the auto maker says production will launch in 2017, Chinese media report patent registrations suggest the Urus will reach the market much earlier.

But Lamborghini likely will wait until it gains marketing experience from the planned 2016 launch of its platform mate, the Bentley Falcon cross/utility vehicle.

The 2017 deadline also will give Lamborghini more time to benefit from the latest developments in hybrid technology.
