Lexus is fielding the most powerful example so far of Toyota’s largest 3-cyl. gasoline engine in its LBX Morizo RR Concept crossover debuting today at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The G16E-GTS 1.6L turbocharged motor with intercooler, which also features in a slightly softer tune in Toyota’s revised Yaris GR hot-hatchback which unveils at the show, is pumped up to a maximum power output of 305 hp at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft. (400 Nm) of torque from between 3,250 rpm and 4,600 rpm.

Lexus says the crossover concept is unapologetic in its performance focus, offering electronically controlled all-wheel drive. It also draws from personal input from former racer and Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, also known as “Morizo”.

The automaker says all key elements of the car have been honed for performance, including packaging, body, suspension and tires. To improve aerodynamics, the development team employed technologies inspired by the world of high-speed air racing.

Special custom features on the concept recall the Toyota Gazoo Racing team with details including Morizo’s signature yellow color in the plated molding of the unified spindle grille, the brake calipers and the seat belts.
