Maserati Races to Geneva

Maserati SpA will debut it long-awaited FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) GT racecar, code-named MCC, at the Geneva auto show in March.

The car will mark Maserati’s official return to racing when it debuts on the FIA circuit in the second half of this year.

Maserati also will debut the Granturismo, the street version of the racer, which goes into production later this year. Sources indicate Maserati will build the 25 units required for FIA racing qualification, but production could be boosted to 50 units if demand warrants. It is unlikely the vehicles will be sold in the U.S.

The MCC racecar is powered by a 6.0L V-12 engine, mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox. This configuration follows in the lineage of past Maserati racers, including the 1956 250F Formula 1 car.

Maserati says it began working on the MCC and Granturismo project in May 2002. Styling was frozen for the Granturismo in September 2002.
