Possible future issues with the vehicles, which were tied down inside the listing ship, prevents the auto maker from selling them to consumers.

Mazda Motor Corp. says the 4,703 vehicles aboard the Cougar Ace ship, which almost capsized in July near Alaska, will be scrapped.

“After thorough testing by engineers from our North American and Japanese (research and development) centers, we decided the most appropriate course of action – with our customers foremost in mind – was not to sell any of the 4,703 Mazdas aboard the ship,” Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, says in a statement.

The ship was towed to the Port of Portland in August for repairs, and the vehicles were unloaded at that time. Mazda had considered selling the vehicles as used.

Despite some of the cars, mostly popular Mazda3 compact cars and CX-7 cross/utility vehicles, “showing little or no visible damage from being tied-down at severe angles for an extended period, the potential for future problems led the company to reconsider its initial decision to sell any of the vehicles as used,” Mazda says.
