Mazda Motor Corp. says it will debut its new Mazda2 subcompact at next month’s Geneva auto show.

It already has announced a concept, the Hakaze, to be shown in Geneva.

The Mazda2, called the Demio in Japan, will be the first model to be revamped since Mazda established its “zoom-zoom” brand philosophy in 2002 with the Mazda6 midsize car.

Although Mazda is tightlipped on details of its new subcompact, the Mazda2 is rumored to have two engines, an 85-hp 1.3L 4-cyl. and a 100-hp 1.5L 4-cyl.

At the 2005 Frankfurt auto show, Mazda showed the B-car Sassou concept. A look at the images released today by Mazda shows some sheetmetal similarity, specifically the hood creases that flow into the grille.

Mazda North American Operations executives have been noncommittal on the subcompact coming to the U.S., despite the fact Mazda has been appointed to head engineering for an all-new B-car platform for Ford Motor Co. Ford holds a 33% stake in the Japanese auto maker and has said it wants a Ford-brand B-car for the U.S.
