Mercedes-Benz Lifts Veil on Maybach-Branded S-Class
The V-8-powered S580 and V-12-powered S680 models are set to see U.S. delivery in April.
Mercedes-Benz reveals a luxurious new Maybach version of the recently unveiled seventh-generation S-Class on the eve of the 2020 Guangzhou auto show ahead of the upmarket sedan’s planned introduction to the North American market in April.
At 215.3 ins. (5,469 mm) in length, the Maybach S-Class is 7.1 ins. (180 mm) longer than the standard long-wheelbase S-Class. The increase is concentrated wholly within an extended wheelbase, which grows to 133.6 ins. (3,393 mm), making it marginally longer than the model it replaces.
By comparison, the two primary rivals (Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur) measure a respective 214.8 ins. (5,456 mm) and 212.8 ins. (5,405 mm) in length.
Together with its longer roofline and rear doors, the range-topping S-Class model also receives a uniquely styled hood featuring a central chromed strip, a chromed grille with Maybach badging, chromed window surround, fixed rear quarter lights and Maybach brightwork within the C-pillars.
Inside, the new Maybach S-Class builds on the architecture of the standard S-Class with more rear legroom, unique trim applications, a new generation of ambient lighting and a range of upgraded digital and connectivity functions.
These include the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX operating system which supports up to five different displays, including a handheld tablet (below) that can be used in the immediate vicinity outside the luxury sedan via a WLAN hotspot.
The headlining S-Class model will be offered with the choice of two gasoline engines in the U.S.: a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0L V-8 with mild-hybrid properties in the S580 and a 621-hp twin-turbo 6.0L V-12 in the S680.
Other markets, including China, also will see a plug-in hybrid version of the new Maybach-badged model based on the new S580e. It uses a turbocharged 3.0L 6-cyl. in combination with a gearbox-mounted electric motor for a combined 503 hp.
Both new Maybach S-Class models for North America receive 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard.
