VIENNA – Pilot assembly of a new small car is under way at Adam Opel’s Eisenach, Germany, plant.

The facility is preparing for the production of a new model codenamed Junior.

“We have the first pilot cars in production,” plant labor leader Harald Lieske is quoted as saying by the German news agency dpa. Lieske says Opel will announce the Junior’s real name this month.

Volume production of the car will be launched in January.

Opel said earlier it would invest some €190 million ($250 million) to adapt the plant for the new model, including new construction.

Opel Eisenach’s 1,600 employees currently are producing the 3-door version of the Opel Corsa.

The Eisenach facility built 129,958 cars last year, down 6.6% from 2010.

Opel reduced the working time in Eisenach from 38 to 33 hours per week earlier this year due to slowing demand.
