Making Roads Safer with Wireless Communication

Deploying C-V2X technology can help save lives

Fatalities and injuries on America’s roads are at the highest levels since 2005. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration an estimated 42,915 people died in vehicle traffic crashes in 2021.[1]  Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology redefines safety by sharing reliable and actionable near real time information directly among vehicles (V2V), infrastructure (V2I) and pedestrians and other vulnerable road users (V2P), allowing them to communicate directly without the use of an operator’s cellular network.

Connecting vehicles and roadside infrastructure that are not necessarily in each other’s lines of sight plays a critical role in road safety. Sensors such as cameras and radar keep vehicles safe in immediate surroundings; however, C-V2X provides more robust signaling to help vehicles see around blind corners and alert drivers to many other types of hazards. Designed for integration into vehicles, roadside infrastructure, transit vehicles, and micro-mobility, C-V2X supports safety applications that could eliminate or mitigate the severity of up to 80 percent of non-impaired crashes.2

The following use cases illustrate the impact of safety applications that use C-V2X technology:

  • Red-light violation warning (RLVW)More than half of all fatal and injury crashes happen at intersections.3   The most common cause of all urban crashes, drivers running red lights result in an average of seven fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries per day.4

  • Intersection movement assist (IMA)Similar to RLVW, IMA safety applications can alert other drivers when someone is traversing an intersection so they can take action to stop.

  • Traffic signal pre-emptionAimed at shortening emergency response time to help save lives, this use case allows vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks to remotely trigger a green light. Related V2V applications share this information with nearby vehicles so drivers can take action to move out of the way, reducing congestion along the route to improve safety for first responders and road users alike.

  • School zone safetyC-V2X alerts drivers when they are entering an active school zone and notifies them of the reduced speed limit. Future applications might include automatically slowing vehicles as they approach an active school zone.
