The U.S. government is spending $7 billion on hydrogen hubs across the country to support the gradual replacement of diesel fuel in trucking and stationary power. But there is also more than another $50 billion in investments from states and industry working to grow supply and demand for the cleanest-burning energy known to exist for transportation.

Of course, the controversy around scaling up a hydrogen economy is that generating large supplies of hydrogen for fuel-cell usage currently is dependent on burning fossil fuels.

Thomas J. Stephenson is co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Albuquerque, NM-based Pajarito Powder, a supplier to the hydrogen industry and one of the most knowledgeable advocates for hydrogen energy.
